Taito’s “Growl” Now Available on PS4, Nintendo Switch via the Arcade Archives
The guy in the purple hat is about to have a splitting headache.
Publisher Hamster has announced that Growl is now available on Nintendo Switch and PS4 as part of the digital Arcade Archives series.
Originally released in arcades by Taito in 1990, this is the first time that Growl (aka Runark) is commercially available as an arcade-perfect home release (it was ported to the SEGA Genesis in 1991).
In Growl, up to four players can pick from a group of rangers who must defend animals from poachers. So PETA should love it, but I’m sure that they’ll find some reason not to. The characters look to be inspired by Doc Savage and Crocodile Dundee, with beat ‘em up gameplay reminiscent of brawlers Double Dragon and Streets of Rage. In addition to your bare fists, each character has a few special moves to keep things interesting, and you can make use of swords, guns, and rocket launchers that you casually find along the way.
Like other Arcade Archives titles, players can post their high scores to the online leaderboards and change various game settings to match their own personal skill levels and taste.
Arcade Archives Growl is available today for $7.99 via PSN and the Nintendo Switch eShop.
