Last week, Quinn Howard’s crowdfunding campaign for The Lie Behind The Star Volume One came to a successful close having raised more than $50 thousand.

Written by Howard and featuring illustrations by Matthew Weldon (Punchline), The Lie Behind The Star is a 42-page graphic novel described as “science fiction with deep philosophical themes, weaving elements of cosmic horror into its narrative.”

In a distant future where an advanced African civilization has harnessed the power of biotechnology, a mystical tale unfolds. Eons ago, their ancestors stumbled upon magnificent bioluminescent caverns deep beneath the Earth’s surface. Within these caverns lay a discovery that would change their destiny forever: a species of mushrooms that reacted to a signal from the cosmos, known as “The Kimora.”

As generations passed, the people of this civilization delved into the mysteries of the Kimora, and through their profound connection with these mushrooms, they unlocked the ability to hear and interpret the data transmitted by this enigmatic signal from the stars. With this newfound knowledge, they constructed an awe-inspiring city entirely composed of fungal matter, shaping their homes, tools, and technology from living organisms.

Their journey didn’t stop there. Over time, their biotechnological prowess reached such heights that they could grow a spaceship using living matter. This remarkable achievement marked a turning point for their society, for they were now capable of exploring the universe beyond Earth. They began to train and nurture the young individuals who possessed the extraordinary gift of hearing the Kimora’s data. Ultimately, they selected nine exceptional young people for a mission that would send them into the vast unknown, with a singular purpose: to find The Kimora.

In their society, The Kimora had transcended mere science; it had taken on mythological and religious significance. The quest to locate this celestial entity represented not only a technological endeavor but also a profound spiritual journey. These nine individuals, chosen for their unique abilities, set out to search for The Kimora, embarking on a voyage that would test the limits of their faith, their scientific knowledge, and their understanding of the universe.
