Taito’s “Rainbow Islands” Joins the Arcade Archives on PS4 and Nintendo Switch

“I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. –Genesis 9:11-13

Earlier this week, Publisher Hamster released Rainbow Islands on Nintendo Switch and PS4 as part of the digital Arcade Archives series.

Originally released in Japanese arcades by Taito in 1987, Rainbow Islands was later ported to multiple platforms including the NES, TurboGrafx CD and Game Boy Color. This Arcade Archives release includes Rainbow Islands Extra, an updated version of the game with rearranged music and enemies that was previously only available in Japan for the SEGA Mega Drive.

A sequel to the arcade hit Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands features the return of Bubby and Bobby who have now returned to their human form and have the magical power to cast rainbows. One or two players can traverse the seven “Rainbow Islands” to defeat enemies, rescue the locals, and ultimately take down the ominous “Boss of Shadow.”

Like other Arcade Archives titles, players can post their high scores to the online leaderboards and change various game settings to match their own personal skill levels and taste.

Arcade Archives Rainbow Islands is available now for $7.99 via PSN and the Nintendo Switch eShop.
