80s Arcade Action Puzzler “Jungler” Now Available on Switch, PlayStation

Got Jungler fever?

Publisher Hamster has announced that Jungler is now available on Nintendo Switch and PS4 as part of the digital Arcade Archives series.

Originally released in Japanese arcades by Konami in 1981 and later ported to some rather obscure platforms (like the Tomy Tutor and Xbox Game Room), this new release is the first time Jungler has been commercially available for quite a while.

In Jungler, players take control of a serpentine creature that navigates maze-like stages in pursuit of other slithery snakes. You can shoot the enemies’ tails to diminish their size or ultimately destroy them, or you can “eat” enemies if you collide with their head… as long as they aren’t larger than you, of course. You can also pick up strawberry-shaped power-ups to increase the length of your own body.

Like other Arcade Archives titles, players can post their high scores to the online leaderboards and change various game settings to match their own personal skill levels and taste.

To be honest, I don’t recall ever seeing Jungler before, much less playing it. It certainly looks like a fun concept, mixing elements of other classic games like Pac-Man and Snake but delivering a unique experience at the same time. I do wish that there was some kind of background music, but that shortcoming was pretty much the standard in 1981.

Arcade Archives Jungler is available today for $7.99 via PSN and the Nintendo Switch eShop.
