Retro Sports Arcade Game “Football Champ” Now on PS4, Nintendo Switch
Don’t get too excited. It’s not that kind of football. It’s soccer-football.
Publisher Hamster has announced that Football Champ is now available on Nintendo Switch and PS4 as part of the digital Arcade Archives series.
Originally released in Japanese arcades by Taito in 1990, Football Champ was later ported to the Super Famicom and Amiga. M International versions of the arcade game (with slight variations) were released as European Football Champ and Hat Trick Hero.
In Football Champ, up to four players compete in the world’s most popular (??) team sport. You’ll select your team and a star player from one of eight countries. Perhaps the game’s most notable feature is the ability to commit small acts of violence similar to Arch Rivals or several hockey games at the time. As long as there is not a referee nearby, you can punch, kick, or yank the shirt if your opponents. All soccer jokes aside, I personally get a kick (okay, I lied) out of the sound effects and crowd noise.
Like other Arcade Archives titles, players can post their high scores to the online leaderboards and change various game settings to match their own personal skill levels and taste.
Arcade Archives Football Champ is available today for $7.99 via PSN and the Nintendo Switch eShop.
