80s Arcade Boxing Game “The Final Round” Gets A Console Release

A punch of nostalgia courtesy of Konami.

Publisher Hamster has announced that The Final Round is now available on Nintendo Switch and PS4 as part of the digital Arcade Archives series.

Originally released in arcades by Konami in 1988, this is the first time that The Final Round (aka Hard Puncher in Japan) is seeing an official home release.

In The Final Round, players become “Jabbin Jim,” an up-and-coming boxer who fights through multiple opponents to become the undisputed champion. JJ’s strength, speed and stamina can be increased by doing well in the training mini games that occur between each match.

The nostalgia is strong on this one. I remember one of our local arcades (maybe the one inside the Wet ‘N Wild water park?) had The Final Round, and for me it was the coolest looking one-on-one fighter until Capcom’s Street Fighter II ushered in the fighting game craze of the early 90s.

Like other Arcade Archives titles, players can post their high scores to the online leaderboards and change various game settings to match their own personal skill levels and taste.

Arcade Archives The Final Round is available today for $7.99 via PSN and the Nintendo Switch eShop.
