E3: “Contra: Rogue Corps.” is the Contra game that nobody was asking for
Filed under “W” for “We don’t learn from our mistakes”, Konami is yet again abandoning the 2-D gameplay from their classic Contra series in favor of an overhead, 3-D shooter.
The result is Contra: Rogue Corps., a game that resembles the ill-fated Contra: Legacy of War for the SEGA Saturn and original PlayStation than any of the Contra titles that fans actually enjoy.
Konami unveiled the first Rogue Corps. trailer during the E3 2019 Nintendo Direct presentation, and from the get-go, it was pretty clear that this new game takes a lighter approach to the Contra series, even featuring a bipedal panda as a playable character. Rogue Corps. blends an overhead shooter style with over-the-shoulder gameplay segments, so just like many games other than Contra, no? You can check out the trailer for yourself below.
It’s definitely a goofy, unproven direction for the Contra series, though it’s certainly not the first time that Contra has taken a wacky turn (Contra: Hard Corps on SEGA Genesis featured a werewolf as a playable character).
Who knows? Maybe Konami can nail down a great project this time around?
Contra: Rogue Corps is scheduled to release 24 September on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
