Spotlight: DC Direct’s Batman Black and White Statue Series (Monochrome May Special)

Batman Black and White is an anthology series focusing on the universe of the titular character, as depicted in short stories by the very best talent in comic books. Originally a four-issue series produced by DC Comics in 1996, the format proved to be so successful that not only did it inspire four additional Batman Black and White series (totaling five volumes), but it also also inspired a long-running series of statues from DC Direct.

The first Batman Black and White statue in the series was released in 2005 and based on the artwork of Eduardo Risso.  Since then, 99 additional statues have been released, including those based on the works of Neal Adams, George Perez, Frank Miller, Bruce Timm and Todd McFarlane.  For me however, one design truly stands out.

The Norm Breyfogle statue was the 80th edition of the Batman Black and White line, and released on August 16, 2017.  As with its predecessors, it was limited to 5,000 pieces and each base is numbered individually.  Originally priced at $100, this edition quickly sold out and has commanded a premium in the secondary market.  A quick search on sold listings on eBay, and you’ll see this piece regularly sells for twice its intended sticker price.

Each base is individually numbered to 5000

One of the unique features about the Norm Breyfogle statue is that it comes in pieces, and needs to be assembled before it is displayed.  There may be other editions with the same unique design, but this was the first time I had seen this done.

The Breyfogle edition of the Black and White statue must be assembled

There are so many other beautiful editions in the series that I’d love to add to my collection.  The ones by Brian Bolland, David Mazzuchelli and Marshall Rogers each stand out.  However, if I could only own one (and I do), then the Holy Grail of the collection for me is the Norm Breyfogle.

What about you?  Do you own any of these statues?  Are there any you are looking for?  Please let us know in the comments section below.  Also, if you’d like to learn more about the complete line of statues available, please check out the DC Comics website.
