Cult Classic RC Racer Re-Volt Hits Switch and PS5 November 5
Acclaim’s RC racer from 1999 is making a comeback to modern consoles (PS5 and Switch) thanks to H2 Interactive.
If you missed the first time around (or if you aren’t old), Re-Volt is Acclaim’s weaponized remote-control car racer, similar to a 3D RC Pro-Am (if you happen to be super-old). Toy cars, improbable laws of physics, and power-ups flying across tracks built out of toy shops, museums, and supermarket aisles. Think Mario Kart without the Mario and designed from a hobby shop.
The reviews for Re-Volt back in 1999 were a little all over the place. The PC and Dreamcast versions generally scored between a 7 and 9 out of 10, though GameSpot found the gameplay to be “evilly unforgiving” and gave it a 5.3. Over at GameRankings, the PC and Dreamcast versions sit at a solid 77 and 79 percent, respectively, while the N64 and PlayStation versions generally fared a bit lower, but largely comparable.
The most consistent complaint levied at Re-Volt was that the physics that made the game special also made it brutal. One bad corner could bounce you out of first place to last, which did happen quite a bit. A steep (tight?) learning curve, for sure, but one that hardcore Re-Volt fans have persisted in overcoming.For over twenty years, the Re-Volt fan community has kept the game alive with custom cars and tracks, fan-run online servers, and eventually RVGL, an open-source rewrite of the game that runs natively on modern systems.
H2 Interactive re-released the PC version of Re-Volt on GOG in 2022 and Steam shortly after (with Steam Workshop support), and now the console editions complete the loop. So Switch and PS5 owners start your engines (RC cars don’t really have those… charge your batteries?) and mark November 5 on your calendar for Re-Volt’s console release. You can also preorder a now open for a big H2 Edition on Switch here, which comes with a limited edition box and slipcase, stickers, a 2-disc soundtrack and the base game (it’s sad that we have to specify that last one) for just $29.99.
