Joe & Mac Retro Collection Brings Three 16-bit Caveman Classics to Modern Consoles on October 29
It’s time to unga bunga smash dinos and ooga booga cave-babes, because Red Art Games has announced that the Joe & Mac Retro Collection is scheduled to release on October 29, 2026, when it launches digitally on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, SeXbox, and Steam PC.
The collection assembles three Data East platformers from the Super Nintendo era, all part of the Tatakae Genshijin (literally Fighting Cavemen) series in Japan. Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja sends the titular cavemen through 12 levels to rescue the women of their village from a gang of Neanderthals, battling dinosaurs along the way. Congo’s Caper is an oddball spin-off starring Congo, a half-human, half-monkey boy fighting through 35 levels to rescue his girlfriend from a demon, as one does. Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics moves the action to a tropical setting, adds new weapons and enemies, and even lets players court and marry their Stone Age sweetheart.
The collection also includes the uncensored Japanese versions of the games. The best known difference is the original Japanese opening of Caveman Ninja, which was changed for the Western releases.
Modern touches include rewind, save states, a CRT filter, custom frames, and local two-player co-op for the games that support it. A new Boss Rush mode lets players battle bosses from all three games in quick succession, and a Virtual Unboxing Experience offers digital versions of the original boxes, manuals, and cartridges to explore.
While the digital release is set for October 29 (and remains oddly unpriced), there are physical editions coming to Switch and PS5 follow in early 2027. The standard and “Rock Editions” will be available through multiple European retailers, while all three physical editions can be pre-ordered now from Red Art Games’ online shop. Physical editions start at โฌ39.99 to pre-order, while the Rock Edition is โฌ69.99. The latter includes a retro-inspired box, an acrylic stand, a three-badge set, a double-sided poster, and an instruction manual. There is also a “Deluxe Edition” limited to 500 PEGI-rated copies per platform which includes a reversible cover, an alternate-art sleeve, an instruction manual, and a sticker sheet.
Now get ready to get your cave-bang on and save the cave-babes! Or was is it the other way around…?
