Indie Roguelite Devilcoin Flips Your Soul Into Slavic Purgatory

You know a deal has gone south when the fine print is written on your own soul. In Devilcoin, a new horror roguelite from game developer Smilingface and publisher Indieformer, you already signed that deal. You sold your soul for money, as one does, and now the buyer, a horned figure from a purgatory steeped in Slavic folklore, (“Hmmmm… could it be SATAN!?!?!?”) is ready to collect. The only way to get out of the deal is to beat him at his own game, a fiddle face-off one coin flip at a time.

Here’s the catch, and it’s an interesting one: coin flips are supposed to be fair. Fifty-fifty odds, heads or tails, no skill involved, just luck and a prayer. Devilcoin takes that simple gamble and turns it into a full roguelite loop. Every round hands you a target score and a limited number of flips to reach it. You pick a side, place your bet, and flip away. Hit the target and you get to continue playing. Miss it, and your run is over, which in this purgatory probably means you are doomed to remain stuck at the behest of Slavic Satan.

Fortunately for you, the house is not the only one that is allowed to cheat a little. Winning earns you currency that you can spend on Artifacts and Blessings, more than 160 of them, that bend probability in your favor and multiply your payouts. Stack the right combination, and every 50/50 coin toss starts behaving more like a rigged carnival game, in your favor for once. That’s the hook: every run becomes an exercise in loading the dice coin until the odds tilt your way.

Between runs, Devilcoin gives you the chance to explore the main room, solve puzzles, and hunt for clues about where you are and who exactly is holding your soul hostage (Slavic Satan). Your progress is maintained between each attempt, opening up new items and new spaces, and the story continues to unfold even when a run goes bust. So every failed flip still moves the mystery forward a bit, which is a kinder fate than most roguelites typically offer. Sure, you still get the crushing feeling of regret, but that regret comes with lore.

This setup should sound familiar to fans of games like Inscryption and Buckshot Roulette, but Devilcoin swaps cards and shotguns for the oldest gamble of all: a coin flipped into the air, a soul hanging in the balance, and the prince of evil as your foe.

Devilcoin is scheduled to release in Q2 2027 on Steam PC, and you can add it to your wish list now. Fair warning: if you choose to flip a coin to decide whether to wishlist the game, Slavic Satan has already won.
