Squid Comics’ Biodegradable Jiu-Jitsu Jackalopes Jump Onto Kickstarter
It’s no secret that we’re expected to suspend our disbelief whenever we pick up a comic book. Biodegradable Jiu-Jitsu Jackalopes (BJ3?) asks you to believe in a jackalope that can be folded, and then it folds you back in return. Chad Townsend’s new comic is live on Kickstarter, and it is exactly the kind of weird, black-and-white indie throwback that the 1980s used to crank out between trips to the Stop N Go.
Here’s the pitch: three brothers, a bridge troll, and a herd (?) of jackalopes who practice the gentle art of folding clothes while people are still in them. Townsend calls jiu-jitsu “involuntary yoga,” which is either the funniest or the most threatening definition of a martial art ever coined. The preview pages introduce Frank, who has questions about what exactly makes a jackalope biodegradable, and it looks as though some raptors show up too, but weren’t velociraptors more of a 90s thing?
The book itself is a 22-page, black-and-white comic inspired by the classic indie comics of the 1980s, with bonus material pulled from Townsend’s sketchbook. Even the campaign page presents itself as a comic, which is either a flex or a warning about how deep the bit goes. Maybe both. Townsend himself is a prop and character designer for WB and Disney TV Animation, and he promises that his books are finished before a campaign even begins. Noice.
Backers can get a copy of BJ3 starting at $10 for either the blue main cover or the red variant cover. If you have more cash to throw around, you can also get multiple copies of the book, an original sketch card ($40), a sketch cover ($100), or a bundle that includes one of everything for $160.
It is important to note that the book and rewards are only shipping to the United States, so all of you European types can either pound sand or take to the streets and start some fiery riots for education Palestine communism whatever. Oh, Australian buyers are out of luck too. I almost forgot about you bogans down there.
