The Atari VCS is heading to the great arcade in the sky, and there is a date on the death certificate.

Atari recently announced that it is sunsetting the VCS, its Linux-based “computer in a box” that was teased at E3 2017 as the Ataribox and raised roughly $3 million from 8,471 backers on crowdfunding before limping through years of delays. Backers finally got their units in December 2020, a retail launch followed in June 2021, and the console has been fighting an uphill battle ever since. On February 1, 2027, Atari will shut down the VCS store for good, and no new games are being added to the platform starting now.

There is still some good news for the tens and tens of you who actually bought one (kidding, kidding, mostly): Atari is not bricking your console. A final OS update will strip out the VCS’s dependence on Atari’s servers, letting owners keep playing everything they already own offline. The company is also releasing a Home Brew app on all VCS devices so the community can keep adding games on its own, and detailed migration guides are coming in the next few weeks. Your library survives; it just becomes a digital time capsule.

The VCS was always an odd duck. It launched at $399.99, roughly a month after the PlayStation 5 and SeXbox, with performance that early backers found underwhelming next to those machines. Atari stopped selling the VCS directly in 2025, so the writing has been on the wood-paneled wall for a while now.

Still, there is something admirable about the whole experiment. The VCS took a one-off Kickstarter campaign and turned it into six years of real platform support (longer than many other historical consoles), with over 100 built-in Atari classics and a storefront that gave quirky indie and retro-inspired games a place to call home. It was never intended to dethrone anybody, but for the retro gaming aficionado, it was a fun nostalgia-fueled conversation piece, if nothing else.

So the VCS joins its predecessors in the annals of Atari history. Be sure to say hello to the Lynx and the Jaguar for us!
