SEGA negotiating to have “Earthworm Jim” included with the Genesis Mini

SEGA unloaded quite a few details regarding the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini at SEGA Fes last week.

The SEGA Genesis Mini is scheduled to release on 19 September 2019, and it comes with two classic wired 3-button control pads, USB power adapter, power cable, and an HDMI cable.

SEGA has confirmed that the Genesis Mini will ship with a total of 40 built-in games. Here are the 10 games announced for the Genesis mini so far:

  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Space Harrier II
  • Shining Force
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • ToeJam & Earl
  • Comix Zone
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Altered Beast
  • Gunstar Heroes

Given that the Genesis Mini comes with 3-button, not 6-button controllers, that almost certainly rules out the inclusion of 6-button games like Ranger X or Eternal Champions (or perhaps any fighting games).

There will be third-party support, as evidenced by the inclusion of Konami’s Castlevania: Bloodlines. We may also be able to add Earthworm Jim to the list, too, according to Earthworm Jim creator Doug TenNapel. On a recent livestream on his YouTube channel, TenNapel confirmed that SEGA was negotiating with the Earthworm Jim rights owners (likely Interplay) to have the classic platformer included with the Genesis Mini.

You can watch TenNapel’s full livestream below. The Genesis Mini comments start at the 6-minute mark.*

Would the inclusion of Earthworm Jim convince you to buy a Genesis Mini? What other games would you like to see? Alex Kidd? Golden Axe? Divine Sealing? Let us know in the comments!

*Updated to include time stamp.
