All-new “Earthworm Jim” comic now on Indiegogo, raises $100 thousand in one day (updated)

On Monday, comic book creator Doug TenNapel launched an Indiegogo campaign for a book he’s waited over two decades to create: the origin of his most famous creation: Earthworm Jim. Titled Earthworm Jim: Launch the Cow, the 160-page graphic novel with finally tell the story of Jim, Psycrow, Princess What’s-Her-Name, and the many unique worlds they inhabit. Oh, and at the time of this writing, the book fully funded many times over, having already raised nearly 600% of its original goal for a total of over $70 thousand. Groovy.

But what is the new EWJ book all about? Launch the Cow is a 160-page, hardbound graphic novel written and drawn by TenNapel and featuring colors by Katherine Garner. Here’s a breakdown of the project from the Earthworm Jim: Launch the Cow Indiegogo page.

“My name is Doug TenNapel and I created Earthworm Jim 26 years ago. Though “EWJ” appeared in award winning video games, an animated series and a toy line, his epic story has yet to be told! We all know the character, but none of us know the story. This deficit in the universe ends NOW!

“For the first time in 27 years I am crafting an epic graphic novel worthy of the true fans of Earthworm Jim in a multi-book set! Let’s launch the cow!

“With your help, we can make Earthworm Jim: LAUNCH THE COW a beautiful volume that is a work of art unto itself. It goes on the coffee table, not some box of wrinkled, floppy comics in the basement. This story will be a sprawling love letter to the fans of Earthworm Jim!”

Backers can get a copy of Launch the Cow for $25. Those looking for more EWJ swag can also find tiers including multiple copies of the book, signed copies and original artwork. Perhaps the most important bonus content is 64-page hardcover book, The Making of Earthworm Jim, which features sketches, concept art, interviews with the original Earthworm Jim development team, and all-new cover art by the the original EWJ box art creator, Mike Koelsch.

Originally created for Playmates in the mid-90s, Earthworm Jim first appeared in a hit video game developed by Shiny for the SEGA Genesis. The character was later featured in a toy line, cartoon series, and of course, sequels to the game. After a two-decade plus hiatus, Earthworm Jim is now having a bit of a renaissance. This comic book campaign comes just two weeks after Intellivision announced that a new Earthworm Jim video game is in development exclusively for their upcoming Amico console. Not only that, but SEGA revealed in April that the original Earthworm Jim would be one of 40 games included with their upcoming Genesis Mini. Double-plus groovy!

Are you ready to to blast into space for an interstellar race against your arch-nemesis Psycrow, to do battle with the hordes of evil lawyers who populate the unholy halls of Heck, and of course, to launch the cow?
