More games censored on PS4: “Crystar” and “Conception PLUS: Maidens of the Twelve Stars”
According to Japanese developer Spike Chunsoft’s website, two of the company’s upcoming releases will be censored on PS4, Crystar and Conception PLUS: Maidens of the Twelve Stars.
Here are the disclosures from Spike Chunsoft:
We would like to inform the community about a content change in the PlayStation 4 version of the title, the pre-title screen cinematic has had approximately 0.5 seconds of footage depicting Rei’s naked buttocks removed. The change does not affect gameplay and no other content has been modified. These content changes will not be applied to the Steam (PC) version.
We would like to inform the community about a content change made to this release. During the Classmating rituals, the Star Maidens’ 3D models will appear in blue and purple (rather than flesh-colored) and will not have detailed facial features. The animation itself is identical. This change does not affect gameplay and no other content has been modified.
So there you have it, the censors at Sony strike again. This time they were insistent on removing 0.5 seconds (HALF a second) from Crystar, while the changes made to Conception PLUS. Fortunately, there is an uncensored version of Crystar coming to Steam, though no such option exists for Conception PLUS. At least these details were disclosed ahead of time instead of trying to pull a fast one of censoring th game via a day one patch, a la Devil May Cry V.
If you are yet unaware of Sony’s censorious turn over the past year (particularly when it comes to Japanese-developed games), the company has adopted a new internal regulatory board (based in California, the pearl-clutching capital of the world) to scrutinize and approve games submitted for publishing on PlayStation platforms. It’s important to note that Sony’s new review board is completely separate from national rating boards which have already been in place for decades.
It’s no wonder that game creators, particularly third-party developers, are frustrated by this new process. We’ve already reported on gameplay features being removed, games being cancelled outright, and long-time developers quitting over Sony’s new censorship policy. Unfortunately we can now add Spike Chunsoft’s Crystar and Conception PLUS: Maidens of the Twelve Stars to the list.
