Konami Code Creator Kazuhisa Hashimoto has passed away
Kazuhisa Hashimoto, the creator of the famous “Konami code” cheat that originated in the 1986 NES port of Gradius, has died, Konami has announced. For those not in the know, the code is “up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start,” with varying effects depending on the game.
Hashimoto created the code during the development of the Gradius home port. Hashimoto explained the origin of the code in a 2003 interview:
“I hadn’t played that much and obviously couldn’t beat it myself, so I put in the Konami code… Because I was the one who was going to be using it, I made sure it was easy to remember.”
The code would go on to be included in other Konami games, most notably the Contra “30 lives code”. Hashimoto himself is credited with working on at least nine Konami games, including Parodius and Lethal Enforcers (though curiously not Contra).
