Festive Cheer All Year Long with the “Holiday Special Podcast” (Jolly Jinglings Special)
Sure, 2020 is almost over, but just like any other year, saying goodbye to the Christmas holiday season is still bumming me out a bit.
Still, we at The Splintering like to keep our Jolly Jinglings festivities going all the way to the New Year, and one easy, cost-free way to hold onto the holiday spirit all year long is to check out the Holiday Special Podcast hosted by Rick Reynolds.
Reynolds launched the Holiday Special Podcast in 2014, and since that time has racked up a girthy library of 116 episodes. Each installment is a deep dive review of a single television special, acting both as a review and a short history lesson on each show’s development and release.
While classics such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Mickey’s Christmas Carol are covered, there’s quite a variety of lesser-known and niche holiday specials featured too, including The Snowman, Christmas Is, and He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special. But The Holiday Special Podcast isn’t just about the Christmas season, Reynolds also discusses holidays from all year-round, such as Michael Jackson’s Halloween, The First Easter Bunny, and It’s Arbor Day, Charlie Brown.
The episodes typically range anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes long, as there’s more to say about some specials than others. It is also worth noting that I’ve heard very little of the host injecting his own political ideology into his commentary, so that’s certainly a plus for those seeking escapist entertainment (keep it up, Rick!).
Now if I can just get him to cover the Wacky WallWalker Christmas Special (aka Deck the Halls with Wacky Walls) my childhood memories will be complete!
You can find The Holiday Special Podcast in most places where podcasts can be found such as iTunes or Stitcher, or you can check it out online at the official website here. You may find a new favorite, rediscover something you had forgotten, or just enjoy a well-produced listen.
