New Take’s Oddly-Titled “Grandpa” Comic is About God Fighting Satan (Crowdfunding Spotlight)

New Take Media recently launched a crowdfunding campaign for Grandpa issue 1, a new 44-page fantasy comic book project with a bizarre title.

With a name like Grandpa, you might expect something like Rambo: Last Blood or Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino, but you’d be wrong, sucka. Created by Damion Daponte and Sterling Vanderhoof, Grandpa is actually about the longstanding battle between Heaven and Hell as fought by their respective angels and demons. I’d like to provide more specifics on the roles of the creative team, but seeing as how the Indiegogo page doesn’t provide any additional specifics, I’ll have to roll with “created by.”

In any case, Grandpa promises “striking Biblical battles”, dark humor, and a steampunk aesthetic. Here’s the brief plot synopsis taken from the official Grandpa Indiegogo campaign page:

Gods daughter Divinia battles the horrific armies of Hell for her planet Arbiter. These battles are weakening her. To exploit this weakness, the Devil sends a demonic cowboy named Razorous to drag Divinias soul to Hell.

Will he succeed?!

Backers can get a digital version of Grandpa (along with a digital “thank you” letter) for $15, while physical copies start at $25. If you have more money to spend, you can also receive the following:

  • Multiple copies of the book
  • Signed copies
  • Variant covers
  • Inside look at the script
  • Exclusive profile picture
  • Digital comic narration video
  • Desktop wallpaper
  • Phone wallpaper
  • Pin
  • T-shirt
  • Cup
  • Poster
  • Bookmark
  • Metal print
  • Custom Miniature
  • Large custom double page spread of you inside of the Grandpa Omniverse
  • Help on rewriting any script of your choosing
  • Access to the private Newtake Media twitter group

While the pricier tiers offer free shipping options, it is worth noting that there is an additional shipping charge starting at $10 for the basic physical tier.
