Ethan Pettus’ “Primitive War” Novels Getting a Comic Book Adaptation
On Monday, author Ethan Pettus launched a crowdfunding campaign for Primitive War issue 1, a 28-page sci-fi comic book. The campaign is already fully funded, having raised 165 percent of its initial funding goal at the time of this writing.*
Written by Pettus and illustrated by Babisu Kourtis, Primitive War issue 1 is intended to be the first foray into a much larger project of adapting the entire Primitive War novel series.
Here’s the official pitch taken from the Primitive War Indiegogo campaign page:
The Primitive War Comic Adaptation has been a shared dream between Ethan Pettus, the author, and Babisu Kourtis, the illustrator, since they began collaborating in 2018. The current comic publishing industry is cut-throat and difficult to breach. We had produced pitch-issues with money we raised with original commission sketches by Babisu Kourtis, and were ultimately unsuccessful in attaining a publishing contract. The Primitive War novel series that our comic is adapting was originally independently published by Ethan Pettus, without the assistance of editors, literary agents, or publishing houses.
Despite the worldwide success that Primitive War has achieved, the challenge of producing an ongoing series adaptation is daunting. A full-length adaptation of the first Primitive War novel would span nearly 40 issues, which in traditional publishing can encompass a half-decade of shared work. Our dream is to start this dream one issue at a time, with the help of potential backers like you, one issue at a time. This way, we can ensure that each issue will land in the hands of impassioned readers, without worrying about budgetary constraints or industry pressures. We want to make a comic adaptation that will stand the test of time, with total creative control, and no oversight by editors or publishers that would treat our work as just another product.
Backers can get a digital version of Primitive War for $5, while physical copies (which come with a digital PDF) start at $8. If you have more cash to spend, you can also pick up the following:
- Multiple copies of the book
- Variant covers
- A Spanish language edition
- Art prints
- Original artwork
- A chance to have your likeness drawn into the final book
It’s also worth noting that there is no additional shipping charge for backers in the United States.
