Strictly Limited Games (the other small-run physical video game publisher) recently announced that preorders for limited boxed editions of Steel Empire – Chronicles will begin on Sunday, 9 April (yep, Easter Sunday).

This collection includes three versions of Steel Empire (SEGA Genesis, Nintendo GBA, and the 2019 remake), as well as a bonus game Over Horizon (NES), which was never released in the United States. While I can’t speak for Over Horizon, I can say that the SEGA Genesis version of Steel Empire is a really good side-scrolling shooter from the 16-bit era.

About Steel Empire

The Motorhead Empire reigns over most of the world with an iron fist, but there is still freedom to be found in the Republic of Silverhead. What follows is your typical (and very likeable) shoot ’em up narrative of the free world sending a sole pilot to save the day and bring peace and harmony to all.

The story itself is displayed through what is most easily described as an old sepia-toned film newsreel. The narrative is filled with made-up historical references that’ll help to set the mood. Of course, just as you’ve come to expect of Strictly Limited Games, we’ll add to this through the presentation of the physical releases.

About Over Horizon

Released in 1991 for the Famicom/NES, this shoot ‘em up was created by the same developers as Steel Empire. Experience a hidden gem of gaming history that was originally only released in Japan and Germany and enjoy the atmospheric and colorful presentation!

The physical copies will come in two versions. The “Limited Edition” (3,000 copies for Nintendo Switch and 1,300 for PS4) are priced at $39.99/€39.99, and comes with the option for either a Steel Empire Chronicles cover or an Over Horizon cover.

The “Special Limited Edition” (2,000 copies for Nintendo Switch and 700 for PS4) will be priced at $59.99/€59.99 and comes with a soundtrack for all the games, a collector’s edition box in the shape of a SEGA Mega Drive (aka Genesis) game case, and several other collectible tchotchkes.

Preorders for both physical editions will launch on Easter Sunday, 9 April, at 11 AM EDT exclusively on the Strictly Limited website, and shipping is expected sometime in Spring 2023, so you won’t have long to wait.
