Publisher CFK recently announced that eastern fantasy shoot’em up game Shikhondo: Youkai Rampage will be participating in the Tokyo Games Summit 2024 held in Musashino, Tokyo, Japan on 2 March. During the event, the latest demo version of the game will be unveiled for all comers to check out.

Developed by Korean indie developer Deerfarm, Shikhondo: Youkai Rampage is an updated version of Shikhondo: Soul Eater, which was originally released in 2017. The game is described as a “bullet hell”-style vertically scrolling 2D shoot ’em up set against an Eastern fantasy backdrop. Players must avoid the onslaught of nasty youkai spirits who have escaped from the spirit world, collect souls, and of course defeat the demonic denizens with their own powerful attacks.

This new version, which is coming soon to both Steam PC and Nintendo Switch, includes “improved gameplay”, new modes, and quality-of-life features to make the game more accessible to gaming journalists more casual gamers.

Shikhondo: Youkai Rampage Features

• Reimagining Korean folktales and legends from a new perspective
• Featuring the Shingiwonyo (신기원요/伸妓寃妖), Chang-gui (창귀), and other mythical creatures from Korean folk legend, Shikhondo: Youkai Rampage presents a creative reimagining of this material as it reworks the youkai from Korean traditional stories into bosses with unique designs.
• Modes reworked, and even a new stage added
• Shikhondo: Youkai Rampage will be made more accessible to users by adding things like difficulty scaling with player skill, new modes, and a new tutorial, allowing everyone from shoot’em up pros to casual players to approach this game without worry.

Thanks to the global players who poured out their support for the original game, Shikhondo will return in its perfected form, sporting a ‘Soul Collect’ system where players must skim by enemy attacks to collect more souls and turn the tides of battle, a new variety of game modes and difficulties, a reworked customization mode, new stages, added Korean voice acting, all sorts of new options, and more.

Key characters

• The girl (Homing attack & induction type character): A girl who fell into this world one day, forgetting even her own name. She begins her journey of hardship, fighting against the youkai in search of her hometown, family, and the memories she lost.
• Grim Reaper (Straight attack & power type character): The celestial emissary performing her given duties by facing those whose grudges have turned them into youkai. She happens upon the girl and decides to join her to help.
