“I’ll tell you what I’d do, man… two chicks at the same time, man.”

On Monday, EA Sports, revealed plans to resurrect the NBA Jam arcade-style basketball game, this time featuring all-stars from not just the NBA, but also the WNBA… as paid DLC, of course.

The NBA Jam franchise has been latent since the Xbox 360/PS3/Nintendo Wii release in 2010 (the 2011 mobile game doesn’t count). EA acquired the NBA Jam license following Midway Games’ collapse earlier that same year. EA Sports’ NBA Live series has struggled to gain a foothold against 2K Games’ NBA 2K behemoth, so shifting focus from a sports simulation to the over-the-top, 2 on 2 gameplay of NBA Jam makes sense.

In that spirit, EA doesn’t look to be creating a bloated “triple-A” package with NBA Jam 25, and is instead creating a game featuring a throwback-inspired, 2D “digitized pixel” aesthetic, and it’s almost guaranteed to be a digital-only release.

As for the WNBA DLC, it will cost an additional $4.01 (WTF?) for each of the twelve WNBA teams, including their all-star roster of household names like… erm… and the one who was arrested in Russia a while back….

Not only will this be the first time that WNBA fan(s?) will be able to pit the likes of the Las Vegas Aces against the San Diego Fleet in video game form, but exhibition games between NBA and WNBA teams are also possible. The Dallas Wings vs. the Dallas Mavericks? Oooh, sweet baby…

Perhaps the most unique feature of the WNBA DLC is in NBA Jam 25’s “Dream Team” mode, where you can build a custom team by mixing and matching players from both the NBA and WNBA, and even choosing your team colors and a unique team name.

NBA Jam 25 is slated to release for the Nintendo Switch, PS5, SeXbox and PC sometime in late 2024.
