Sonic Team’s next “Sonic the Hedgehog” game not coming until 2021

In a recent interview with Game Informer during E3 2019, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka indicated that SEGA has big plans for Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary 2021. According to Iizuka:

“2017 was a big year for Sonic. The next big year for Sonic is 2021. That’s the 30-year anniversary for Sonic. We are now preparing”.

The interviewer noted that the release of Sonic Generations was timed to coincide with Sonic’s 20th anniversary, and asked if SEGA had something similar planned for the 30th anniversary, Iizuka replied, “Maybe”.

Given that 2021 puts us squarely in the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Scarlett era, so it’s very possible that the next Sonic Teamdeveloped Sonic the Hedgehog title will be next-gen. Until then, fans still have 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie to tide them over. Yeahhhhh….
