E3 Recap: 5 brand new IPs we’re looking forward to playing (besides Cyberpunk 2077)
Like every E3, we were wowed and bombarded by a steady stream of refreshes and updates to gaming properties we all know and love. But while these forays into the familiar may get most of the press, developers at E3 2018 still had several interesting new IPs to show off.
Below, we’ve featured five of our favorite new IPs from the show, with the exception of Cyberpunk 2077, only because it has seen plenty of online attention and coverage already.
5. ManEater – PC
Maneater is an open-world, action RPG set in the Gulf Coast where players control a giant bull shark out for revenge against the humans who slaughtered your mother. What kind of revenge? The kind where you rip and tear unsuspecting beach-goers and ocean explorers limb from limb! Glorious.
In addition to the bloody fun of reducing your human targets to meat, gamers can explore a variety of settings, including sunken wrecks, swamps, or the open ocean. You’ll also be able to upgrade and customize your shark with a variety of stats or evolved body parts.
Maneater looks like tons of fun, though only PC gamers will be getting a chance to play it for the time being. Are sharks the “master race?”
4. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – Xbox One, PS4, PC
Set in Sengoku-era Japan (late 1500s AD), Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice features a disfigured warrior known as the “one-armed wolf” who has sworn to protect the descendant of an ancient bloodline.
Sekiro comes to us courtesy of From Software, the creators of the Dark Souls series, so it’s not surprising that the enemies and battles look particularly brutal. The gameplay is a blend of stealth, platforming, and visceral head-to-head combat. Fortunately for the one-armed wolf, your prosthetic arm comes equipped with an arsenal of deadly tools to assist you.
Also quite fortunately, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will be available for both PC and consoles… except the Switch. Womp womp.
3. Daemon X Machina – Switch
Daemon X Machina is an all-new mech action game from the creators of the Armored Core series. Your power suits (Arsenals) are fully customizable with a multitude of weapons to attach to your arms, shoulders and back, which can be swapped on the fly as you obtain more from defeated enemies.
Daemon X Machina features an interactive environment, as your Arsenal can grab objects including cars and street signs to use as weapons. Multiplayer modes include both online and wireless multiplayer modes.
2. Ghost of Tsushima – PS4
Another action title set in ancient Japan, although Ghost of Tsushima takes place centuries earlier than Sekiro (in 1274 A.D., to be precise).
Developed by Sucker Punch and set during the events of the Mongol invastion of the island of Tsushima, you play as one of the last surviving samurai warriors defending Japan from the Mongul menace. The gameplay trailer featured above looks incredible, and it caused quite a stir when it was revealed at E3. The gameplay features stealth and quick-reaction combat and is accented by cinematic touches which highlight the story. I should also mention that it has been confirmed that a Japanese language track will be available if you’re not a fan of the English voices.
Ghost of Tsushima is a PlayStation exclusive, fanboys.
1. My Friend Pedro – Switch, PC
Fans of old school 2D action shooters like Contra or Gunstar Heroes probably can’t help but be excited by My Friend Pedro. The frantic, bloody action mixed with a bit of zany humor has already drawn comparisons to the Deadpool character, but it personally reminds me more of SCUD: the Disposable Assassin for SEGA Saturn. Developed by Dead Toast, My Friend Pedro was the capstone of Devolver Digital’s hysterical press conference and fit the tone of their presentation perfectly.
Cheering you along your bullet-born bloodbath is a friendly talking banana, Pedro (yes, Pedro is the banana), and the gameplay features slow-motion action sequences which allows you ample opportunity to relish the glorious sprays of bullets and blood.
I’m a sucker for both 2D action and hyper-violent games, so My Friend Pedro absolutely stole the show as far as I’m concerned and I’m going to be pissed if it sucks.
My Friend Pedro will be heading to Nintendo Switch and PC.
Of course, nothing against Cyberpunk 2077, but it essentially stole the show at E3 2018 and yet another article drooling over it seemed like overkill.
To be honest, this was a pretty good year for new IPs at E3, and that’s got to be good news for gamers, right? Unless they all suck, I guess.
