Ethan Van Sciver’s “Reignbow the Brute” Reigns Supreme on Indiegogo

On Sunday, renowned comic book artist and Cyberfrog creator Ethan Van Sciver launched the long-awaited crowdfunding campaign for Reignbow the Brute, a 48-page graphic novel that is a “high-testosterone” parody of girls’ toy franchises from the 1980s.

Much like Van Sciver’s other crowdfunded projects, Reignbow the Brute is already a runaway success story, raising well more than $200k in the first 24 hours. That’s already a double “Six figures, bitch!”

But what’s Reignbow the Brute all about? Here’s the official plot synopsis taken from the Reignbow the Brute Indiegogo campaign page:

REIGNBOW THE BRUTE is a hard fightin’, hard drinkin’ Fairy Barbarian, who battles the Thundercloud Men and maintains order Under the Rainbow. It isn’t easy, with unicorn pests, thumb sucking Apes, Commie Elves, and Onion Grove Children requiring constant vigilance.

But Reignbow’s worst day ever happens when after a series of Honeysuckle shots, he quarrels with one of the UNBEARABLES, a clan of miserable emotionally manipulative grizzlies, and they steal something precious to him.

Not only that, but PAULA POKKIT, a former…girlfriend whom he hasn’t seen in 15 years, finds him to let him know that he has a son, and that boy needs a father!

Mount up on Reignbow’s Girthy Stallion NEIGHPALM for the adventure of a lifetime, to retrieve GRASSBLADE and and perhaps, along the way, teach young SHIRO POKKIT what it means to be a man!

Backers can get a copy of Reignbow the Brute for $25. If you have some extra cheddar to burn, there are variant covers to choose from, as well as two additional books – My Girthy Stallion: Barnstorm and Cool Story Bro: Toxic Fairytales for Masculine Men. There’s also a special Reignbow the Brute lunchbox that will come packed with a copy of every book (including variant covers), as well as any bonus stretch goals that the campaign unlocks along the way.

While Ethan Van Sciver may have lost his “biggest crowdfunding campaign of all time” crown to Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR, the remarkable success of Reignbow the Brute shows that Van Sciver remains a key prime mover in the independent comics scene (even without his amphibious cyborg), and that the comic book crowdfunding model still hasn’t proven to be a fluke or a fad.

Congratulations to Ethan Van Sciver and the rest of the Reignbow the Brute team on yet another successful crowdfunding campaign. You can check out some sample artwork below or visit the full Reignbow the Brute Indiegogo campaign page here.
