Nintendo confirms that “Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore” will be censored both in Japan and the West

Nintendo has made an important update to the Japanese website for Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore confirming that the updated Switch port of the game is based on the Western version of the Wii U original. That means the upcoming Encore re-release will be censored no matter which region in which of you reside.

This revelation won’t come as a complete shock to those who have been monitoring the situation since TMS #FE Encore was announced, given that the footage highlighted in the reveal trailer featured censored images identical the Western Wii U original.

If your memory is fuzzy or you simply weren’t paying attention to Wii U games in 2015, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is a mashup of both the Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei and Nintendo’s Fire Emblem series. The western localization of TMS saw several changes from the Japanese original, most notably including costume changes and extra effects which – you guessed it – cover up the female characters. The excellent YouTube channel Censored Gaming covered the many ways in which TMS was censored a few years ago, and you can watch their most complete rundown of the original localization changes below.

This new announcement will undoubtedly be seen by many as a step backward for Nintendo, who has been been far less censorious over the last couple of years than its competitors (i.e. Sony). At least there’s still plenty of time for informed consumers to consider this revelation when deciding whether to purchase the game.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is scheduled to release for the Nintendo Switch on 17 January 2020.
