Review: “Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection” (Nintendo Switch, PS4)

Today we’re all celebrating the Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection,* a new retro compilation of all of SEGA’s Wonder Boy and Monster World games from the 80s and 90s released to mark the 35th anniversary of the series. Weird number, but who’s complaining? If you’re thinking that this review seems awfully familiar, there’s a very good reason, as ININ Games published a Wonder Boy Collection less than a

Game Review: “Intrepid Izzy” (Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch)

It’s short for Isabelle, methinks. Publisher Ratalaika Games recently released the retro-inspired 2D platformer Intrepid Izzy for modern consoles.* Developed by Senile Team, Interpid Izzy started its life as a small-scale indie project for the SEGA Dreamcast successfully crowdfunded in 2017. While the game is fairly light on plot, the titular “Intrepid Izzy” seems to be some kind of explorer who happens

Game Review: “Avenging Spirit” (Nintendo Switch)

Upon first hearing about Avenging Spirit, I immediately thought of an old GameCube game called Geist. Ever play that one? Well, the gist is, you play as a ghost who possesses enemies and then uses their individual abilities to progress. Definitely a similar concept to Avenging Spirit, but after playing through it, I am more reminded of the old SEGA Genesis game, Kid Chameleon.

Review: “Taito Milestones” (Nintendo Switch)

No Arkanoid, no Bubble Bobble, no Space Invaders, no Darius… How does one create a Taito Milestones arcade collection without those games? While some are available on other collections, it’s very strange to have a collection of classic, 1980s Taito arcade games without them (Fully acknowledging that the original Space Invaders was released in the 70s).  Instead, Taito Milestones (published

Retro shoot ’em up aficionados have plenty to celebrate of late, given the increasing number of re-releases and collections of classic shooters recently landing on pc and consoles. Review: “Cotton Reboot!” (PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch)

In the era between arcade classics like Defender and “bullet hell” shoot-em-ups like Ikaruga, the 2D shooter genre really hit its stride. The greatest titles of the 80s and 90s featured a mishmash of several genres, including sci-fi space shooters (R-Type, Thunder Force), fantasy (Wings of Wor, Lords of Thunder), and even underwater warfare (In the Hunt). However, one of

Review: “Within the Blade” (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch)

Ninja games were all the rage when I was growing up, and I had no shortage of great ones. Tecmo’s Ninja Gaiden, SEGA’s Shinobi, Natsume’s The Ninja Warriors, and Konami’s TMNT brawlers were all in my regular gaming rotation as a kid. Of course, this is before the advent of 3D gaming, when titles like Acquire’sTenchu started to up the

E3: “Contra: Rogue Corps.” is the Contra game that nobody was asking for

Filed under “W” for “We don’t learn from our mistakes”, Konami is yet again abandoning the 2-D gameplay from their classic Contra series in favor of an overhead, 3-D shooter. The result is Contra: Rogue Corps., a game that resembles the ill-fated Contra: Legacy of War for the SEGA Saturn and original PlayStation than any of the Contra titles that
